Between December 1951 and January 1952, three separate plane crashes barreled down onto Elizabeth, New Jersey. Many dozens perished as the crashes destroyed entire city blocks. While efforts to stop the expansion of Newark Airport ultimately failed, President Truman formed an airport safety commission in response to the tragic events.
